In the competitive world of international trade, the cost of moving goods can significantly impact your bottom line. Many exporters are surprised when their shipping bill is much higher than expected, often due to a concept known as Dimensional Weight (DIM weight). At Dropdex Logistics, we are a hard-working team dedicated to helping you navigate these complexities. We strive to provide high-quality air cargo solutions that prioritize both safety and cost-efficiency for your high-value shipments.
What is Dimensional Weight?
Dimensional weight is a pricing technique used by air carriers to account for the amount of space a package occupies in relation to its actual physical weight. Airlines have limited space on every flight; therefore, a large box filled with lightweight items like apparel or footwear takes up more valuable “real estate” than a small, heavy box.
How it is Calculated:
Most carriers use a standard formula to determine this:
$$(Length \times Width \times Height) \div DIM\ Divisor = Dimensional\ Weight$$
.
The carrier then compares the physical weight of your box to this “theoretical” weight and charges you for whichever is greater. This is known as the Chargeable Weight.
Five Strategies to Strive for Lower Shipping Costs
1. Right-Size Your Packaging
The most effective way to lower your DIM weight is to eliminate empty space. Avoid using oversized boxes for small items. We strive to help our clients select packaging that fits their products snugly, reducing the “air” you are paying to ship.
2. Use Poly Mailers for Soft Goods
For non-fragile items like apparel and certain leather goods, consider switching from boxes to poly mailers or padded envelopes. These are lightweight and flexible, often resulting in a lower dimensional profile than rigid cardboard boxes.
3. Optimize Internal Padding
Bulky void-fill materials like large bubble wrap or foam peanuts can actually cause your box to bulge, increasing its measured dimensions. We strive to recommend lightweight, slim alternatives like air pillows or molded paper inserts that protect your goods without swelling the box size.
4. Consolidate Multiple Orders
Instead of shipping several small boxes, we strive to provide Consolidated Shipping solutions. Grouping multiple items into one efficiently packed container can often lead to more competitive shipping rates and lower overall DIM weight charges per unit.
5. Measure and Weigh at Extremes
Carriers measure boxes at their widest and tallest points. If a box is bulging in the middle, the carrier will round up that measurement. We strive for accuracy by encouraging our clients to use sturdy, double-walled boxes that maintain their shape during transit.
